Saints soccer hard man, Francis Benali, faces his toughest match up this Saturday – to get stuck in. Mud that is! That’s because the Southampton FC legend is competing in the inaugural Fuddy Mud Sucker Fun run at Fairthorne Manor, near Botley in Hampshire.
On Saturday 31st the first mud race from Off-beat-Events pits runners against various tricky obstacles as well a course that will be a virtual mud bath.
Runners are expected to turn up to try to beat the conditions and obstacles on the former 18 hole golf course which includes mud bunkers (old golf course sand bunkers), ditch run, ditch crawl, tunnel of darkness, tire field, skip dip, a four foot straw fence and to cap it all runners can slide back to the 18th hole on the massive water slide.
The event attracting fun as well as serious runners offers a 4.5k lap for fun or a two laps totalling 9k for the more adventurous. Francis Benali who is taking part in the 9k run said: “I’ve played on a few terrible pitches in my time but nothing will prepare me for this course. But I’m sure we’ll all have a lot of fun!” Event organiser Spencer Wakeling from Offbeat Events said: “This is going to be a real challenge; it’s going to take a sense of humour and team work as well fitness. When Mark Twain said ‘golf is a good walk spoiled’, he probably hadn’t seen a load of muddy runners toughing it out on one of the most extreme challenges to hit a golf course! ”Our advice is simply, be prepared to get muddy and wet!
And if you fancy making an event out of it, we have 50 camping pitches available. Fire pits and BBQs are available for hire on a first come first served basis from the club house. Alternatively you are welcome to bring your own.”
The race is raising hundreds of pounds for Muscular Dystrophy.
